Native to Hungary, Mangalitsa pigs were close to extinction in the early 1990's, before being saved by breeders. Known for the curly coats, they were first brought to the United States in 2007.
The Berkshire is also a rare breed, originating in South East England, however unlike the Mangalitsa, has been in the United States since the 1800s.
The Hampshire on the other hand, is considered to be the oldest American breed of hog.
Our pigs are never restrained while giving birth, and we do not clip the piglets teeth or tails. The pigs are free to play, root, nap and wallow with their herd mates all day and night. They are fed a high quality grain based feed is free of antibiotics, synthetic vitamins and artificial vitamins, and is rounded out with New Mexico grown alfalfa, vegetables, pecans and juniper berries. Our feed is milled nearby in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Practices
Founded by Galisteo rancher Tim Willms, Talus Wind Heritage Meats purchases animals directly from Willms’ Galisteo ranch as well as from small New Mexico ranchers in the northern and central parts of the state.
We purchase, transport, process and distribute the product ourselves, enabling us to track the animal from ranch to refrigerator. This allows us to conform to Willms’ stringent standards of traceability and transparency.
Transparency refers to Willms’ dedication to environmental stewardship. We guarantee that our animals are raised by traditional ranching methods on properties that are environmentally sustainable.
Humanely raised, transported, and processed, our animals never see a feedlot. The result? Meat that is tender and flavorful, animals that are well cared for, and local agriculture that is supported by New Mexicans.
